According to Jessica Alba, I'm Not A Mom

The internet is abuzz today with venomous tweets and blogs attacking Jessica Alba.  Fiercely protective mothers of only children get their backs up easily.  I, too, was incensed when I first read her comment, but I'm thinking it's been taken way out of proportion.

Before her second child was born, Jessica was quoted as saying:
“It feels like you’re really officially, really truly a mom when you have two kids. One kid, you’re a mom for sure, but two takes it to another level.”

Not the most eloquent way to say it, but I'm pretty sure she just means that more work is headed her way.  That is, if she doesn't have a nanny.

So, by Jessica's definition of what officially, really truly makes one a Mother, Octo-Mom or that Duggar lady are the SuperMoms we should all emulate?

When I was younger, I dreamed that by my thirties I would have 4 little ones running around the house.  As it turns out, I am the mother of one child.  Not by design - another pregnancy just hasn't happened yet.  Not every parent raising an only child made that choice.  Sometimes the choice is made for them.

Clearly there is a huge spectrum of mothers - from excellent to despicable...but if they have given life, or have given a life to one already living, they are already officially, really, truly a mother.
